StreetSmart Australia grant - thank you

StreetSmart Australia is helping to provide a place for homeless and at risk young people to explore and develop their creative and life skills.

Hope Street is thrilled to be a recipient of one of StreetSmart Australia’s 2016 CafeSmart Community Small Grants.  Adjacent to Hope Street in Melton is a Community Centre which is currently used as an activity and learning space. The grant of $1,250 will enable Hope Street to rejuvenate the Centre into a more youth friendly and welcoming environment for artistic expression, workshops and life skills education.

The art space will include new areas for displaying young people’s art pieces on plaster boards and peg boards on the Community Centre’s currently bare brick wall.  Additional art supplies and materials will increase the creative options for young people.

Thanks to the generous support of StreetSmart Australia, young people will have a place where they can be creatively inspired to express themselves, and where they can feel safe and have a greater sense of belonging, which are key areas for development and positive growth.

UPDATE: On Sunday 04 December, Hope Street Melton staff and volunteers raised $1437.50 at a fantastic Bunnings Melton Sausage Sizzle.  Thank you so much to the Melton community members and all involved for their support of the Community Centre.

Hope to Home in Whittlesea

FEATURED PILOT PROGRAM: Hope to Home in Whittlesea

Many young people face obstacles when trying to secure stable accommodation due to no rental history, lack of affordable housing, and no employment to sustain rental leases.  The Hope to Home in Whittlesea pilot program will address these issues by:

  • Facilitating the transition of up to 30 young people (and their children) from the Hope Street in Whittlesea program or Whittlesea Housing into 1 and 2 bedroom units
  • Providing case management once they secure private rental of these units
  • Helping these young people maintain their tenancy, employment, education and training, and community connections
  • Engaging the support of community stakeholders including local businesses to address barriers contributing to youth homelessness

Please contact us if you would like to become a partner and support at risk young people and young families.
